The teaser for the Baywatch reboot starring Stephen Amell rekindles nostalgia for the 1990s: slow motion and a new team of lifeguards reappear on the small screen's most famous beach.

The world of Baywatch is back on TV with the first teaser for the reboot unveiled by Stephen Amell on Instagram. It brings everything that made the cult series such a success back to center stage. Slow-motion running, the Californian ocean and red swim suits return to center stage, in an operation that clearly plays the 1990s nostalgia card, while offering a contemporary retelling of the story.

Stephen Amell at the helm of a new generation of lifeguards

At the heart of this new story is Hobie Buchannon, played by Stephen Amell, now grown up and head of the Baywatch team. The character takes over from the legendary Mitch Buchannon, in continuity with the original series. The balance between past and present rests on a strong narrative spin: Charlie, Hobie’s daughter he never knew existed, arrives and is ready to step into the world of lifeguards—upending the family’s balance.

A new cast of intimate dramas and spectacular rescues

The reboot features a young, diverse cast. Among the main characters are Nat, played by Hassie Harrison, a former Olympic athlete with a complicated past, Luke (Noah Beck), a young recruit raised in a firefighting family, and Trina (Shay Mitchell), an ex-lawyer who gave up a prestigious career, called back by the beach. The stated ambition is to preserve the original formula of heroism, intertwined relationships and high-tension situations, while updating it with more contemporary, less idealized dynamics.

FOX bets on a comeback in prime time

Produced by FOX and Fremantle, the series has already landed a 12-episode order for its first season. The project is being overseen by showrunner Matt Nix, while pilot direction has been entrusted to McG. According to early reports, the series is due to hit the U.S. market early next year. The teaser hints at an ambitious production, designed to put Baywatch back at the center of TV pop culture.

Between memory and reinvention of a pop icon

This new chapter doesn't simply replay the past. The idea is to reinvent a collective imagination of sun-drenched beaches, spectacular rescues and iconic music, while injecting contemporary themes and more nuanced conflicts. The result is a balance between familiarity and surprise, designed as much for those who grew up with the original series as for a whole new generation of viewers.
