Lego's largest set in history is a Sagrada Família replica — and it won't come cheap

Lego celebrates the completion of the Sagrada Família with the world’s largest set: over 12,000 bricks recreate Antoni Gaudí’s famous unfinished masterpiece to scale, giving rise to another miniature masterpiece. This set is aimed at collectors: it will go on sale starting November 1 for €749.99.

An impressive journey that has allowed this set to break all previous records, from the Eiffel Tower (over 1 meter tall and 10,000 pieces) to the famous World Map, which had almost 12,000 pieces. It should be noted, however, that these are records for commercially available sets. In reality, some sets created by artists far exceed 12,000 pieces, such as Maurizio Lampis’s splendid Trevi Fountain, composed of over 20,000 bricks.

The construction of the Sagrada Família—and this is one of its most fascinating aspects—traces the very history of Gaudí’s construction site: construction actually begins with the apse and the crypt, before moving on to the Nativity Facade, the only one completed by Gaudí during his lifetime (as is well known, the famous architect died after being struck by a tram while on the basilica’s construction site).

Only then are the naves, sacristies, and the grand façades that made the monument famous assembled, culminating in the six main towers that dominate the basilica’s silhouette.

The only downside (as is often the case with this type of collectible set): the price. The Lego Sagrada Família, on sale starting November 1, will cost €749.99.
