There was a time when MTV was the benchmark for discovering new artists, music videos and cultural trends. You would turn on the TV and let the music roll, without selecting anything, without personalized suggestions. Today, that model seems long gone.
The broadcaster still exists, but has long since reduced the space dedicated to music videos, concentrating on reality TV and generalist formats. What's for more, the recent closure of several music channels in Europe reinforces the idea that those days are gone for good.
MTV Rewind, a digital tribute to the golden age
Out of this nostalgia was born MTV Rewind, a website created by an enthusiast who decided to recreate the old MTV experience, in an online version. It's neither a traditional streaming platform, nor a commercial project, but a tribute to the era of all-music channels. The idea is simple: a continuous sequence of video clips, without algorithms and with minimum interaction, just like watching television in the 1990s.
A retro interface and thousands of video clips
The heart of the project is a large collection of YouTube videos, integrated and organized in an incredibly vintage interface, filled with references to the pop culture of the time. As soon as you open up the website, MTV's historic August 1981 launch program automatically starts up with VJs (video jockeys), iconic clips and a vintage TV beat. From there, video after video follows, offering that random sense of discovery that seems almost revolutionary nowadays.
Theme channels and cult programs
MTV Rewind also lets you choose between different thematic channels, which are actually playlists inspired by the broadcaster's historical programming. You can easily navigate through various musical decades, from the 1970s to 2025, or select legendary formats such as Headbanger's Ball, dedicated to rock and metal, Yo! MTV Raps for hip hop, or MTV Unplugged, with legendary acoustic performances such as Nirvana. And then there's 120 minutes, a symbol of American alternative music.
A project born of nostalgia
The creator, known on Reddit as ShillyLou, confided that he had developed the site in just a week (or so), driven by a desire to return to a more passive and spontaneous way of listening to music. To date, over 27,000 video clips have been integrated, and the catalog is set to grow. MTV Rewind 's ambition is not to replace modern platforms, but to remind people that it used to be enough to press 'play' to feel part of something.
