Pontificio the cat obtains degree at a University in Medellín

  • Apr 10, 2026 03:00

Taking naps in classrooms and hallways, Pontificio has become a familiar face to students, faculty and staff at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana de Medellín. For years, the cat lived within the walls of the EcoCampus, lounging in the sun and accompanying students during study breaks. Today, although living in a private home, Pontificio is still symbolically part of the academic life on campus.

From campus to new home

UPB announced the cat's adoption on January 16, emphasizing that the decision was made with the welfare of the now adult animal in mind. The news evoked mixed emotions among students: nostalgia for saying goodbye and joy in knowing that Pontificio is now receiving constant care.

A few days later, the university shared photos of the cat's new home, showing Pontificio adjusting to his new environment, surrounded by attention and peace. On social media, the University wrote, "We can't help but shed a tear of joy. The EcoCampus was not only his territory, but also his happy home."

The 'Notipontificio' and symbolic graduation

To keep Pontificio's memory alive among students and alumni, the university launched the 'Notipontificio' initiative, through which it will continue to share moments from the cat's life. This gesture is a way to remember his constant presence during years of study and university activities.

The most original recognition came with a symbolic badge awarding Pontificio the ID 000-MIAU-UPB, identifying him as a member of the 'Faculty of Sleeping and Spinning Sciences' and as an 'official sleeper and cuddle expert'.

The most important award is that of 'Graduate with honors in unconditional love,'  valid 'forever in our hearts'. As the university explains:

"It's our way of telling him that although he now rests happily in a new home, his place on the UPB EcoCampus is forever assured."

Pontificio's' quiet presence has left an indelible impression on the many students who have petted him or taken pictures with him. And so, the university decided to celebrate him by making him an official part of academic life. Not a formal academic title, but a gesture that once again warmed the hearts of university students and the entire online community.
