His name is Merlin, he’s two years old, and this pet duck has become a global celebrity thanks to clicks and shares on social media. With the ease of a Hollywood star, this funny little bird strolls leisurely among the celebrating fans, literally establishing himself as the country’s most beloved good-luck charm.

From the beverage stand to the world stage

Merlin was originally given as a gift to little Cristian. Every weekend, the duck would accompany Cristian and his mother, Karla Ivette Gómez, to the capital’s historic center, perching next to their mobile cart selling water and cold drinks. His presence had become a real local attraction: perched proudly near the bottles, Merlin piqued the curiosity of passersby. He thus proved to be the perfect sales assistant, boosting daily sales and supporting the family’s income, all while displaying extraordinary calm amid the urban chaos.

Then, everything changed. The transition from anonymity in public squares to international fame took place last Thursday, when Mexico kicked off its campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa. Amid the celebrations that brought the Alameda Central and the Palace of Fine Arts neighborhood to a standstill, Merlin emerged from the crowd wearing the official green jersey of the Mexican national team. A custom outfit, complete with a pair of protective socks on his feet to prevent burns from the hot asphalt.
